Air and Earth

There is no light in these caverns of the flesh
So I paint blindly in the ancient darkness
The air is thick with fear
The earth is wet with longing
And death is swimming in the sweat of every moment
No god has overseen this dark night of the soul
Beneath my skin flows the river of my suffering
If I could silence this desire to be loved
I'd wither peacefully alone in my surrender
If I could kill the starving animal within me
I'd waste away in the numbness of the famine
Life exists within the interstitial realm
Where thirst and terror are eclipsed by the communion
Of twin desperations in the grip of chemical empathy
If only death could be just as beautiful

Every meaningless day feeds larval thoughts of the end
Death has laid her eggs in the thorns of my experience
Was it the desert soil, or was it my decrepit seed?
I rot in my dark contemplation, explaining what will never change
I fold my hands, and vacuously pray
With all the hope my sorrow fails to muster
My thoughts emerge in gnashing of the teeth
And all to say that words will never raise the dead
A smoke rises from the pit where flesh smolders into ash
I gather all that I can find, but nothing becomes of what has passed
What fool struggles to persist when cursed with all-consuming pain,
When truth ceases to exist and the mind is eroded in the rain?
